Self-Defence Classes
Many people believe that martial arts and self-defence go hand in hand, but the reality is that they are two different skill sets which each require a unique approach. Ikari Dōjō offers comprehensive self-defence classes for men, women and juniors.
Self-defence is not only about combat techniques used in a situation, but is made up of three distinct phases, awareness, defence and debrief.
Ikari Dōjō approaches the awareness phase by training perception and avoidance strategies. The best way to avoid a self-defence situation in the first place is by utilising situational awareness and behavioural psychology to put a potential attacker off. Simple things like bearing, posture and eye-contact can mean the difference between stopping a situation before it even happens. Situational awareness is critical to self-protection, not only against attack, but against accidents and other dangerous events.
The defence phase includes sub-phases such as de-escalation, escape and combat. Each self-defence situation will be unique and students of Ikari Dōjō are taught to maximise safety and combat avoidance. De-escalating a situation before it becomes violent is a valid strategy and can avoid injury to either party. Running or escaping over difficult terrain can also prove to be a better solution that simply engaging in combat. Ikari Dōjō does include combat drills and theory to train students for the worst possible outcome of a situation, but only as a last resort.
Once a self-defence situation is past the defence phase it rolls into the debrief phase. Self-defence situations can be traumatic and it is important to learn psychological techniques to calm the mind and body after an event. In the case of a lethal outcome in a self-defence situation, students must also be aware of their rights and the legal implications of their actions. The legality of self-defence is relatively complex, but important to know. Ending up on the wrong side of the law in a self-defence situation can have serious implications on an individual. Debriefs by law enforcement are common in serious situations and it is important to know how to use the right words to avoid serious fines or prison.
Ikari Dōjō places half of its training on theoretical concepts and half on practical drills. Together, these two parts of the curriculum will protect anyone from any number of serious situations including robbery, mugging, rape, molestation, burglary and murder.
